Installation Instructions for Courtyard Flooring, Green Roofs, and Roof Terraces

Introduction

Pordrän with an approved waterproofing membrane, is a durable solution that has performed well for many years in everything from hospitals and industrial buildings to single-family homes and apartment buildings. Because Pordrän drains and insulates, the floor structure stays warm and dry. In addition, the material is lightweight, which reduces the load on the structure.

These installation instructions describe how to use the Pordrän system with various types of superstructures on courtyard floors, green roofs, and roof terraces. Before beginning installation, make sure to follow the important basic requirements for the proper functioning of the Pordrän system.

Key prerequisites for the proper functioning of the Pordrän system

The following points must be followed and implemented to ensure proper operation.
  1. Waterproofing, penetrations, and surface materials/finishing.
    • Always follow the instructions provided by the designer or manufacturer.
  2. Choosing Pordrän
    • Select the thickness and hardness based on the project’s requirements for drainage, insulation, and load-bearing capacity. See the sizing table for vertical loads.
  3. Before installation
    • Always make sure the waterproofing membrane is intact and clean. Sweep the surface thoroughly.

  4. Protection during construction
    • Do not walk on the panels during installation; always place protective sheets on top of them. Store Pordrän panels according to the instructions on the packaging.

    • When operating machinery on top of the panels, use lightweight machines with track shoes and drive on the superstructure material, not directly on the panels.

Instructions for various applications

The images provide a general overview of how Pordrän be installed. As for the surface material or superstructure itself, other solutions may be used—always follow the designer’s or manufacturer’s instructions.

Lawn areas

NOTE: Before you begin, please read the prerequisites and all the steps in the instructions carefully.
  1. Make sure the waterproofing membrane is intact and clean.
  2. Place the geotextile over the waterproofing membrane. Allow for an overlap of approximately 250 mm.
  3. Install Pordrän panels, preferably with staggered joints if you have multiple layers.

  4. Cover the boards with geotextile fabric. Allow for an overlap of about 250 mm.

  5. The plant bed and turf shall be installed in accordance with the designer’s or supplier’s instructions.

Planting areas

NOTE: Before you begin, please read the prerequisites and all the steps in the instructions carefully.
  1. Make sure the waterproofing membrane is intact and clean.
  2. Place the geotextile over the waterproofing membrane. Allow for an overlap of approximately 250 mm.
  3. Install Pordrän panels, preferably with staggered joints if you have multiple layers.

  4. Cover the boards with geotextile fabric. Allow for an overlap of about 250 mm.

  5. Plant beds and plantings shall be installed in accordance with the designer’s or manufacturer’s instructions.

Sedum

NOTE: Before you begin, please read the prerequisites and all the steps in the instructions carefully.
  1. Make sure the waterproofing membrane is intact and clean.
  2. Place the geotextile over the waterproofing membrane. Allow for an overlap of approximately 250 mm.
  3. Install Pordrän panels, preferably with staggered joints if you have multiple layers.

  4. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for water-retaining layers.

  5. Plant the sedum according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Walkways (pavers/gravel)

NOTE: Before you begin, please read the prerequisites and all the steps in the instructions carefully.
  1. Make sure the waterproofing membrane is intact and clean.
  2. Place the geotextile over the waterproofing membrane. Allow for an overlap of approximately 250 mm.
  3. Install Pordrän panels, preferably with staggered joints if you have multiple layers.

  4. Cover the boards with geotextile fabric. Allow for an overlap of about 250 mm.

  5. Bearing installations must be performed in accordance with the manufacturer’s or designer’s instructions.
  6. Compensation layers shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s or designer’s instructions.
  7. Pavers/gravel should be laid according to the manufacturer’s or designer’s instructions.

Road surfaces (e.g., asphalt)

NOTE: Before you begin, please read the prerequisites and all the steps in the instructions carefully.
  1. Make sure the waterproofing membrane is intact and clean.
  2. Place the geotextile over the waterproofing membrane. Allow for an overlap of approximately 250 mm.
  3. Install Pordrän panels, preferably with staggered joints if you have multiple layers.
  4. Cover the boards with geotextile fabric. Allow for an overlap of about 250 mm.

  5. Bearing supports and mounting supports shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s or designer’s instructions.
  6. Asphalt is laid according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Retaining walls & point loads

NOTE: Before you begin, please read the prerequisites and all the steps in the instructions carefully.
  1. Make sure the waterproofing membrane is intact and clean.
  2. Place the geotextile over the waterproofing membrane. Allow for an overlap of approximately 250 mm.
  3. Install Pordrän panels, preferably with staggered joints if you have multiple layers. Different levels of stiffness may be required depending on point loads. Refer to the sizing table or consult a structural engineer.
  4. Cover the boards with geotextile fabric. Allow for an overlap of about 250 mm.
  5. Install the Pordrän panels on the wall.
    • The first layer of Pordrän panels is installed against the wall using Pordrän —1–2 per panel. Drill through the panel into the wall using an 8 mm drill bit. Install the panels at a height of 30–50 mm below the intended finished ground level.
    • If a second layer of Pordrän panels is installed, secure them to the first layer using Pordrän . Use approximately 4 fasteners per panel.
    • Make sure the geotextile fabric covers the entire way down to the Pordränskiva on the joist floor. Allow for an overlap of approximately 250 mm. The fabric coming from below must not be attached to the cover strip; instead, it should be folded around the top edge and behind the Pordränskiva.
    • Finish the installation by placing a fiberglass mat as a second layer at the top, beneath the trim strip.
  6. Install the trim.
    • Apply a bead of Pordrän Tiivistysmassa the trim before installation.
    • Secure the trim with Pordrän , c/c ≤150 mm. If the wall is uneven, the rivets may need to be placed closer together.
    • Joints in the cover strip must overlap by at least 50 mm. In corners, use Pordrän or straight strips laid in a staggered pattern and sealed with Pordrän Tiivistysmassa. Our corner cover strips are available for both outside and inside corners.
    • The installation of trim strips is completed by applying a bead of Pordrän Tiivistysmassa the joint between the wall and the strip.
